The Deer by Travis Shosa
The Deer
Fresh from the forest, they
assigned the deer to a
freeway but
first they feed her
diamond seeds,
sparkling durable things.
They wrap her in
rabbit down and
drop her in
rush hour. She is
prepared: there was a
car crash workshop,
there was a
car crash life.
Commuters careen
around the deer, she
thanks Cernunnos for her
oversized doe eyes,
drinking in collision
like spring water.
Diamond seeds sprout and
bloom, the deer bleats,
“hit me beat me
hit me beat me,
this is all I know,
I’m strong, I’m soft,
I’m stuffed with diamonds,
I just want to be part of the show.”
